Finally the Facebook Places application has been rolled out in the UK but what does this mean for your business? Well if you have a business page already it means you can add location based information and a handy little map for your fans. Unfortunately though it isn’t just a simple case of claiming your page and sending out updates to your fans. Instead Facebook has upped it’s security, for once, and when claiming a business page you will need to supply countless pieces of evidence to prove you are in fact the official representative for that business. This is all well and good but as Facebook didn’t request any of this information for the old business pages it looks like people could well end up fighting to claim their original pages back from unofficial representatives.
If you have yet to set up a business page all you need to do is do a quick search for your new Places business page and Facebook will take you through a step by step guide on how to create the rest.
It has yet to be seen if Places will replace such heavily used apps like Foursquare or Gowalla in the GPS games race but from the reaction so far it seems ‘players’ have already invested far too much in their Foursquare accounts to be switching over to Places or using both side by side. Only time will tell if Facebook can once again conquer all.
